RULES
SAPIENTIAE RULES

Basics:

1. As this game will have mature content, we ask that all players be at least 18 years of age.

2. There is a limit of three characters per player to start. However, a fourth character may be applied for with moderator approval ONLY if a player has already proven they can handle three easily. Conversely, if we find you have applied for multiple characters and are not playing them all actively, you risk removal of one or more of your characters. Basically, take only so much as you can handle, and if you're superhuman, we might let you take more. :)

On character activity, a character must be played at least once a week to be considered active. That is, a character must appear in a log or participate in a thread at least once a week lest he/she be in danger of being poked or, if the character is frequently dormant, be taken back from the player.

Applying:

1. Check the character list for available characters. We will not be accepting OCs. There are many, many characters to choose from within the HP-verse and they range from being very involved to mere mentions. If you're really stuck on playing an OC, pick a minor name from the list and build a life around them.

2. Everyone is dead. It's the whole premise of the game. If your character died in canon, their life and death is exactly as it was in canon (though, they can choose to forget parts of it, but more on that below). If your character was still alive at the end of DH, you must finish their life for them. You need to know what they did after canon ended, how they lived out their lives, and how they died.

3. Characters who are ghosts in the books have chosen to remain in the world in which they lived; therefore, they would not pass on to this world. This means we will not accept applications for Nearly-headless Nick, the Bloody Baron, etc.

4. Your character will get to choose upon death if they wish to remember every part of their lives or if they wish to forget parts of it. It is up to you, but we ask, if your character chooses to forget, that you are able to justify why.

5. Your character is also able to choose the age they wish to be. Please choose this wisely, as your character WILL NOT AGE (though, they are more than welcome to still celebrate their birthdays, if they want :)). This means if Fred Weasley decides he wants to be five, he will be five FOREVER, even if George shows up at the ripe old age of one hundred and thirteen. Please also consider whether your character might wish to develop romances/sexual partnerships with others, and make sure their age is appropriate if you wish to do so. Only in extreme circumstances will mods approve an age change.

6. Played-Bys, or PBs, must actually resemble the character you wish to play. Everyone sees them a little differently, of course, but they need to at least respect the general idea in the books. Basically, don't apply for Pansy with a Halle Berry PB or anything of that sort. We reserve the right to question your PB if it seems inappropriate, but we don't really want to do that.

7. The moderators reserve the right to reject applications that they feel do not fit the community. Please respect this decision, and do not email us back asking us to explain why you were rejected. Our decisions are final.

At the time of your application, you must have:

1. This disclaimer in your user info:

This journal is part of a non-profit role-playing community and is not intended to be taken literally as the character portrayed. I am in no way associated with the owners of the intellectual property the character belongs to. No copyright infringement is intended, nor do I pretend to own any part of said property, trademarks or characters.

2. At least one icon.

3. Introductory info for your character in your user info (e.g. Severus Snape’ profile). It can be basic or in depth, it's up to you. If you're character is choosing to forget all of part of their canon life, please include in that information a brief description of what your character remembers and what they forgot (e.g. Fenrir Greyback’s profile), so it would be easy for another player to know why the memories were forgotten.

Once you are approved, you will have five days in which to post a journal entry and two weeks to participate in a scene. If you have not done this in that period of time, you will be removed from the community.

Once you are approved, an introductory post will be made by one of the moderators in the OOC community for you. It would be a very good opportunity to meet the other players, as mostly everyone will be waiting to welcome you. :)

General Game stuff:

1. Play nice! We don't want to see anyone get flamed or hassled by another player and if it happens, let us know. We'll talk to both parties involved and try to resolve the problems. We will not hesitate to remove a player who is mean to other players. This said, if your CHARACTER is mean to someone else and that is in-character for them, they can be as mean as they like. If Sirius calls Severus a greasy bastard, that's fine, but if the Sirius-MUN calls the Severus-MUN a greasy bastard, that's NOT fine. Got it? We don't want to have to wear our angry mod hats because they're itchy.

2. Generally, no god-modding or power-playing anyone else's characters. Don't move anyone around, put words in any one's mouth, or put expressions on anyone's faces unless they are YOUR characters. If your character is being god-modded, please inform the moderators immediately. However, if you have the consent of the character’s player (if it helps in a log, for instance), then you may.

3. On posting:

a. Treat character journals as if they are your character's journal. This means that they will be writing and won't be seeing each other, and most likely they are in different places. Your characters may bring their journals wherever, they’re quite portable and water-proof. They come in different colors (choose for your character).

In addition, a character may spell their entries private to themselves, private to specific people, or leave them public. We ask that you post at least one journal entry that at least one other person can reply to each month.

b. The main community shall be used to post logs, which may be posted as a single story or as threads. Label them as follows:

What: (Explain what the log is about)
When: (time of the day)
Where: (location of the meeting)
Who: (Which characters are involved? Indicate if it’s open for others to join.)
Complete: (Yes/No)
Rating: (G-NC17)

(Log text under a cut follows.)

Do not forget to include tags for easy navigation. Tags will be available for your character upon approval of your application.

c. Several things to remember:

Private Entries

Respect a private entry; nobody can see it. We encourage writing private entries to establish and build your character, but these entries are not meant for the eyes of other characters.

Generally, the charm used to keep an entry private will work. However, because such charms are done by the characters, these spells may fail due to one reason or another (emotional instability, doubt and/or hesitation, perhaps a desire to have someone see without blatantly admitting to such a desire, etcetera). Players who wish to use failed private charms to enhance their plots must label the part of the entry where the charm failed. An example:

"[Private]
I do not have the right to demand forgiveness as if it is my worth. I acknowledge what I have done, [the privacy charm wavers]but should your forgiveness be offered of your own free will, know that it shall be considered a most precious gift."

For (admittedly subjective) aesthetic reasons as well as to save space, it is not necessary that the label states for whom the text would be visible. If you have a specific character in mind for whom the spell will fail, leave a not in the OOC community.

Likewise, to anyone who encounters an entry with a defective privacy charm, check the OOC community first before you have your character "see" the post.

Strikethroughs

Words erased by strikethroughs must generally be considered unreadable by characters.

If, however, a character understanding what was written underneath the strikethrough will help in a plot, and so long as the players of both characters agree that the phrase can be read, then it is all right to let your character read it. Play as if the word/s was/were not properly erased.

4. You must participate in a scene at least once every month. This is only a minimum. We'd love to see more activity that that!

5. Please be patient, as not everyone is in the same time zone. Your mods, for example, have a 12-hour time difference. It never hurts to get to know your fellow players and what works best for them as far as scene-ing together goes. If you are unable to post for any period of time for whatever reason, please leave a note for us in the OOC comm. RL IS VERY IMPORTANT and we recognize that. However, if it becomes clear that a player is inactive for no apparent reason or is absent for very long periods of time, we reserve the right to remove the character.

6. Interaction between characters is a must. Find ways to play together and we do encourage peculiar interactions. The mods will periodically present you with challenges, ranging from the mundane to the wild, which will help in this, but we encourage you to develop your own story lines. The more active you are, the less frequently we will feel the need to challenge you.

7. Challenges: Anything goes when it comes to this. We might ask you to do something as simple as to make a new friend, or we could put you in a position that's difficult, like having Severus and Sirius wake up one morning mysteriously shackled together. Some misbehaving characters may also find themselves ill the morning after. Anything that is a major change or disruption to the characters lives will not be permanent, except in very rare circumstances and with player approval/request.

8. If your character wishes to pursue a relationship with another person, great! If the player of the other character is game, even better! However, if the other player does not wish to play along, it's their call. This doesn't mean your character can't still TRY, the other player should never feel pressured into any relationship they aren't comfortable with.

Along those lines, SOLID canon relationships still exist here. Lucius and Narcissa, James and Lily, and Molly and Arthur, to name a few, are not going to decide in death to go separate ways for no good reason. Before you can go about saying that they have split up, we encourage that you speak with the player of your character's supposed spouse and provide at least one entry to end the relationship.

9. There will be no pregnancies, engagements, weddings, or major life-altering events without prior clearance with the mods. Leave notes in the OOC comm for such major plots. Other than that, your characters are free to do as they wish.

10. Lastly,

a. Magic flows freely without the need for a medium, thus negating the need for wands.

b. Some characters may do away with dates altogether as they are in the afterlife, but the climate will change as if the characters are still in a tilted planet revolving around a sun. For uniformity, climate changes shall follow that of the northern hemisphere, specifically that of the present UK. Present (2007-2008) lunar calendars shall be used to distinguish moon phases.

c. There is no monetary currency. Some staples (food, tea, etc.) are provided for free, but there is no specific list; bottomline is that it doesn't have to be difficult. The universe of the afterlife works in favor of its occupants. Special items may be traded between characters, but this is left to the discretion of the players.

OOC:

1. There will be absolutely NO OOC content in the game or character journals. The only exception to this rule is if you would like to post a life history of your character in your journal. This should be the first entry added, or should be backdated so as not to show up randomly on everybody's flists. If you need to contact other players, use the OOC comm, or contact them via email or aim/y!m.

2. You are NEVER required to give out any personal information to other players outside of your contact information. You may provide whatever name/alias you wish to use so long as you will answer to them. Whether you wish to share more with anyone in the game is completely left to your discretion.

3. Never hesitate to email your mods at sapientiae_mods@hotmail.com. :)

On your application, where it asks if you have read the rules, please reply with "I don't believe in an afterlife, although I am bringing a change of underwear," so we know that you really have humored us and read this whole thing. :)
